Join us to discover the defensive architecture surrounding the city of Cartagena during this hiking tour, with magnificent views, a visit to the Castle of La Concepción, and tasting a Spanish tapa to conclude a perfect half-day tour.
On this route, you will learn about the defensive history of the city of Cartagena, dating back to the 16th century, whose origins trace back to defensive towers along the coast, responsible for protecting against pirate attacks. But it was in the 18th century when Cartagena experienced its period of greatest splendor, due to the construction of defensive buildings such as the defensive wall of Carlos III, the Military Arsenal, and the so-called coastal batteries, which we will explore in detail on this tour.
Starting from the pier, our hiking route begins by following the Blue Trail, initially encircling the port area before exiting the city. On this route, our first stop will be at the viewpoint of the coastal battery of San Fulgencio, where we can also admire other coastal batteries such as those of San Isidoro and Santa Florentina, as well as Santa Ana, a spectacle for the eyes.
On our way back, we will make our second stop at the Curra Lighthouse. The purpose of this lighthouse was, and still is, to help vessels avoid colliding with the so-called “laja,” a gigantic rock that posed problems for ships of the time and is located just beneath the site where the lighthouse stands today.
After exploring this fantastic part of the city, we will proceed to the Castle of La Concepción, of Muslim origin, conquered by the Catholic king Alfonso X in the 13th century. It features a courtyard and a tower from which you can see the entire port and the old city center of Cartagena.
A perfect visit to our city wouldn’t be complete without tasting its cuisine, so we’ll make our last stop at one of the local bars to try a typical Cartagena tapa with a refreshing drink before returning to the pier.
IMPORTANT: The meeting point to start the tour, where you should be at the date and time of your reservation, will be at the Spanish Flag in the port of Cartagena.
